Don't worry, such a crisis can be remedied or prevented yourself if you follow this simple step-by-step guide we have created for you. Even though you are an experienced sailor, sailing alone or with close family is different from sailing with a large group.

An adventure can be so wonderful that you don't want to miss anything because you are unsure about organising the trip.

This is where we help you by reminding you that you are not alone, and that Tubber Charter Experts are always there for you! In addition, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about organising a sailing holiday. From picking your crew to selecting your itinerary and destination. Have a look at the steps we are going to discuss and let's get started!

  • Step 1 - The crew
  • Step 2 - The right destination
  • Step 3 - The right budget
  • Step 4 - How are you going to get there?
  • Step 5 - Search & Charter

The Crew

The first step may sound obvious, and you probably already have a list of names in your head. But, we recommend thinking twice about it because it's not as simple as it seems. Besides, choosing the right friends to bring along is crucial.

The first thing to think about is that you are on a boat, in the middle of the sea or an ocean, and you can't go anywhere without each other. Now you're probably thinking that's easy to do, but if you put people together on a boat who were once in a relationship, or are now arguing, or someone who comes along purely because they like one of the other friends, you can expect that the trip won't be as enjoyable.

On a boat, where there isn't much space, and where you can't take a walk away from the rest of the crew, you have to remember that relationships are between your crew and whether they think a bit alike. The biggest piece of advice is:

Get a group that is comfortable with each other and avoid all drama!

Group Sailing

Besides, when it comes down to the number of people you take with you, it all depends on how busy you want to be on the boat, and what your budget is. More people obviously means less cost per person, but that may not be what everyone wants. We often see 8 to 10 people with about 4 cabins going well. That makes the trip relatively cheap per person, especially if you compare it to staying in a hotel.

The right destination for organising sailing holidays

Choosing the right destination is the next crucial step in organizing a great sailing holiday. The questions you need to ask yourself, and the group, include: In which countries can we sail with our experience? In which countries can we have fun? To answer these questions, there are several factors you need to think about.

Accessibility

If your friends come from all over the world, you have to think about what the best connections are to your chosen destination. Can they all fly or drive to the starting port?

Experience

For different destinations, you need different experience. Consider how people will react to tougher conditions if they don't have much sailing experience. Of course, there are some destinations that are perfect for beginners, like this one. Or you can charter a sailing yacht with a skipper. The skipper can not only drive the yacht, but will provide enough guidance to let you sail without worries.

Activities during sailing holidays

Talk to your friends about what you want to do. Are you looking for hot-spots where you can hit the nightlife? Or are you looking for peace and quiet with beautiful views? Or and combination of both? In addition, you should think about what you want in terms of facilities in the ports and surrounding areas. Some friends might want to spend a night in a luxury hotel, or eat in a luxury restaurant.

To make it a little easier for you, we have below some suggestions of great cruising routes and other tips you can follow. Check them out here a choose what suits you best.

Budget for organising a sailing holiday

After you have put together the crew and decided the destination, you have already made the hardest choices. All that's left now is to make the budget per person. This allows you to search specifically for a sailing yacht. Here, of course, you also have to think about extra costs, such as groceries, taxes, and harbour fees. These don't have to play a role in the search for a boat, but everyone should consider them before they step on board.

Sailing Budget

If you decide to sail with a skipper, factor that into the budget. Most websites, including Tubber, have that option and there you can see exactly how much it will cost for a given period.

How will you get there?

This has already been discussed in step 2. So you already know that you have to consider how easy it is for you and your friends to get to the starting port. The easiest way is probably by plane. So look at flight prices and what time you will arrive.

One trick we like to share with you is choosing the right season. There are so many locations with perfect weather and sailing conditions that you don't think of right away. This can work to your advantage, as airfare prices can vary by season and month. This may take some research. But we are sure it will be worth it if you are on a cheaper flight!

Where can I rent a boat for a sailing holiday?

The last step is simple once you have decided the rest. Do a Google search and select a website that offers everything you are looking for. Of course, we recommended Tubber because we have over 12,000 yachts in over 600 locations. In addition, we offer secure payment, global insurance, and 24/7 customer service.
