Lock sails without damage checklist
- Make sure enough fenders are hung on both sides of the boat. It is useful to hang them on both sides because you do not know beforehand where you will be in the lock.
- Wait for the red light. Only sail into the lock when it is permitted.
- When the lights are green and red you should be ready to sail into the lock.
- When the lights are green you can sail into the lock. This is done in order of arrival at lock. The only exception is that commercial vessels have priority and can enter the lock first.
- Sail into the lock as far as possible and join the boats already there.
- Make sure the mooring lines are put around the lock bollards and switch off the engine.
- Note: always make sure the mooring ropes are not tight but on slip. If the mooring ropes are tight, you run the risk of the boat hanging off the wall when the water level drops. This can cause damage to the boat.
- While passing through the lock, listen to the VHF radio so you get the lock keeper's instructions.
Tip: make sure you have a knife within easy reach so you can cut the mooring lines if they get stuck.
