Book your next yacht
Explore the heart of France’s premier wine regions from the water: from the tranquil Nivernais canals to the majestic châteaux of the Loire. In this region, you can easily hire a boat—often with no formal captain’s licence required—depending on the vessel type and local maritime regulations.
Immerse yourself in the idyllic landscapes of Burgundy and the Loire Valley. Together, these regions form a dream destination for anyone who loves the "joie de vivre" of the French lifestyle. A boating holiday here is the perfect family getaway, creating unforgettable memories together on the water. Drift past vibrant gardens, medieval towns, and vineyards that stretch to the horizon. Whether you choose a luxury yacht or an authentic canal boat, Tubber offers the best selection at the most competitive prices.
With over 12,000 boats across 600+ locations, Tubber always has a match. Rent a boat from the port of Sucé-sur-Erdre or other popular nearby hubs like Saint-Martin-sur-Oust, Dinan, or La Rochelle. In the Loire region, you can choose between a sporty sailing yacht or a comfortable motorboat.
For ultimate relaxation, opt for a skippered charter. Discover the most beautiful hidden gems in total safety while picking up some sailing tips from your professional captain. Owners of private vessels are also welcome in the region, provided they comply with local French water regulations and possess the correct insurance and documentation.
Many UK travellers wonder if they need a formal qualification to drive a boat in France. While French laws differ from the UK, the transition is very smooth for British boaters.
No Licence Required (Hire Boats): For most canal boats and inland hire cruisers under 15 metres with a speed limit of 20km/h, no formal captain’s licence is required. In France, hire companies are authorised to issue a "Carte de Plaisance" (temporary permit) after your arrival briefing, which is valid for the duration of your holiday.
When is a Certificate Mandatory? If you are renting a more powerful motor jacht (over 6HP/4.5kW) or a vessel capable of exceeding 20km/h, you will typically need to show a proof of competence.
ICC (International Certificate of Competence): This is the most recognised document. If you already hold an RYA Powerboat Level 2 or an RYA Day Skipper certificate, you can apply for an ICC through the RYA to prove your eligibility for inland or coastal waters.
CEVNI Endorsement: For larger vessels on inland waterways, an ICC with the 'Inland' (CEVNI) endorsement is often required.
Safety & Navigation: Even without a licence, you must follow the 'Code Fluvial' (Inland Waterways Rules). This includes speed limits and understanding that large commercial barges always have the right of way. Ensure you stay clear of their blind spots—if you can't see the captain, they can't see you.
Personal Handover: Every Tubber rental starts with a thorough briefing. We will explain exactly how to steer, how to operate the French locks (écluses), and how to navigate safely under the historic bridges of the Loire.
Châteaux & Culture: Visit the 22 famous Loire châteaux, including the breathtaking Château de Chambord. The landscape is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Wine Lovers' Paradise: This is France’s largest wine region. Visit world-renowned estates in Chablis, Sancerre, or Saumur to taste the finest Sauvignon Blanc directly from the cellar door.
Active Outdoors: Cycle the Voie Verte, a stunning 180 km cycle path following the canal, or hike through the wild nature between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire.
