Choosing the Camargue means choosing nature in its purest, rawest form. This sprawling 750-square-mile wetland is the "Wild West" of France. Here, where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean, water is the ruling force. You will cruise along the Canal du Rhône à Sète, a sun-drenched waterway connecting historic fortified towns with salty lagoons. It is the realm of pink flamingos, the legendary white horses, and black bulls.
The biggest advantage? The Camargue is almost entirely flat and has very few locks. This makes it the most relaxing region in France for those who would rather log miles than crank lock handles.
Renting a boat in the Camargue is a sensory experience. The scent of salt water, the sound of thousands of birds, and the reflection of the pink salt pans are sights you won't find anywhere else.
A Birdwatcher’s Paradise: The only place in Europe where pink flamingos breed in the wild in such vast numbers (up to 20,000 pairs).
Sun & Sea: You sail parallel to the coast. Moor the boat, grab a bike, and within ten minutes, you’re standing in the Mediterranean Sea.
Lock-Free Cruising: Ideal for beginners; you can glide through the open landscape for days without interruption.
Day 1: Beaucaire & Arles – Your journey begins at the imposing castle of Beaucaire. From here, take a side trip to nearby Arles, the city of Van Gogh and Roman arenas.
Day 2: The Gateway to the Delta: Saint-Gilles – Tie up at this historic city and admire the UNESCO-listed abbey. You’ll notice the landscape opening up; the horizon stretches further, and the air becomes saltier.
Day 3: The Walled City of Aigues-Mortes – An absolute highlight. You sail toward massive medieval walls rising out of the marshland. Climb the Tour de Constance for an incredible view of the Salins du Midi, the world-famous salt lakes that turn a vibrant pink in the summer.
Day 4: Flamingos at Le Grau-du-Roi – As you pass the salt pans, you'll often see flamingos standing in large groups in the water. Visit the fishing village for fresh seafood and bike to Plage de l'Espiguette, one of the wildest sandy beaches in France.
Day 5: White Horses and Black Bulls – You cruise through the heart of the nature park. Keep an eye out for the gardians (cowboys) on their white horses driving black bulls through the marshes. Stop at the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau for the best birdwatching in the region.
Day 6: Sailing Across the Étang de Thau – A unique experience: you leave the canal and sail across a gigantic saltwater lagoon. Navigate between the oyster beds toward the harbor town of Bouzigues.
Day 7: Sète, the Venice of the South – End your trip in this vibrant city full of canals. Taste a local tielle (octopus pie) with a glass of ice-cold rosé right on the quay.
The Pink Flamingo: Visit the Parc Ornithologique du Pont-de-Gau to photograph these iconic birds from a very close distance.
The Salins du Midi: Salt harvesting is a centuries-old tradition here. The salt pans turn an intense pink due to a specific type of algae, creating a surreal contrast with the white salt.
The White Horses: Camargue horses are born dark and only turn white as they age. They are perfectly adapted to life in the brackish water.
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer: The unofficial capital by the sea. Climb the roof of the fortified church for a panoramic view of the dunes and the ocean.
Bug Spray is Essential: Especially between May and September, mosquitoes are very active at sunset in this wetland area. Be prepared!
Bikes on Board: Because the landscape is so flat, a bike is the perfect way to get from the dock to the beaches or remote nature reserves like Domaine de la Palissade.
Watch the Wind: The Mistral can blow quite hard here. Because the region is open, your boat will catch a lot of wind; keep an eye on the weather forecast when docking.
Taste the Region: Visit the Musée de la Camargue for the history, and end the day with a traditional gardiane de taureau (bull meat stew) or fresh oysters from the Étang de Thau.
