Although not deep, the lakes in Friesland are very nice to sail on. Most lakes in Friesland were created by peat extraction. These are also the shallowest: the Alde Feanen near Eernewoude, the Leijen, the Bergumermeer. The Pikmeer near Grou even gets its name from a special type of peat, called Piek. Such lakes in Friesland are perfectly navigable with boats with not too much draft. A meter is often ideal, or better yet, rent a variable draft sailboat. Some sharp yachts have that (Feeling, Delphia, Allures), but you can also rent a flat bottom. Other lakes, especially those in the southwest corner of Friesland, have been created by glaciers. As a result, the Fluessen and Het Heegermeer are deeper, about 1.50 m. Renting a motorboat in Friesland is easy because these ships do not have too much draft as standard and can, therefore, sail almost anywhere.
The IJsselmeer and the Lauwersmeer share their history as dammed seas. However, there are differences: the IJsselmeer was an inland sea where the Lauwersmeer was the mouth of the river Lauwers. But it ended equally for both. Tamed and chained by the Delta Works, they are now good freshwater lakes. In case of a storm, they still show where their origin lies, and the IJsselmeer, in particular, can cause problems for the improperly prepared skipper on his rented sailing yacht. The Lauwersmeer falls under the coverage of the coast guard station Schiermonnikoog and is also concrete and punctured as seawater (puncture at the 1.30 depth line).
IJsselmeer and Lauwersmeer are both fairly deep. Especially in the Lauwersmeer, there are many parts where there are 5 meters of water, sometimes right next to the former sandbars that are still there (and which fortunately are well indicated by concrete). The Lauwersmeer has many sheltered jetties and moorings, without tourism taking away its purity. Here you are still alone in the world. A short crossing takes you quickly to the Wadden Sea behind the lock, and Schiermonnikoog is only an hour away.
Many sailing routes in Friesland are also doable for less experienced tenants. With a rented Fox 22, a Tirion, or a Pointer 22, that is the best. You can sleep with two people on the Fox and Pointer. You can also rent a motorboat in many places in Friesland. Find the hustle and bustle of the Sneekweek on the Sneekermeer from Terherne (Terhorne). You can sail over the Slotermeer to Woudsend and from Heeg over the Heegermeer and the Fluessen. Moreover, you can sail on the IJsselmeer from Stavoren, Morra de Grote Brekken, Lemmer, the Tjeukemeer, or the Langweerder Wielen from Langweer. Many sailing yachts are rented on the Frisian side of the IJsselmeer. You can sail not only across the IJsselmeer but also to the Wadden Islands, for example. Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Makkum, are all on the Frisian side of the IJsselmeer, so sailing a short distance away.
Due to the heating and interior steering position, renting a motorboat is also attractive early or late in the season. Besides, peat sailing yachts are available for rental. Sailing in Friesland is very diverse, as the areas explained show. That is why renting a boat in Friesland is so much fun, you can go in all directions!
