A Hidden North Aegean Story
An Interview with Angelos of Anasa Experiences | Partner of Tubber
When people think about sailing in Greece, they usually picture white-washed houses stacked on cliffsides in the Cyclades, or turquoise bays stretching along the Ionian coast. Instagram feeds are full of it. Travel magazines repeat it endlessly.
Almost nobody says Kavala.
And maybe, just maybe, that is exactly why you should.
We sat down with Angelos, founder of Anasa Experiences, a local sailing company born and rooted in Kavala in Northern Greece. What followed wasn’t a sales pitch. It felt more like being let in on a well-kept secret by someone who genuinely loves the place he calls home.
The Destination Through Their Eyes
Kavala sits in the far north of Greece, facing the deep Aegean and the emerald island of Thasos. Surrounded by natural beauty, this charming coastal city offers an unparalleled experience for those seeking a magical getaway.
It is not a destination built for mass tourism. There are no cable cars, no Instagram-famous sunsets attracting thousands of visitors to the same viewpoint, and no glossy resort strips.
Fishing boats still return at dawn. Locals still take their coffee slowly. Evenings stretch along the harbor promenade. The old Byzantine walls overlook a city that simply lives at its own pace. Exploring the Old Town, with its historic charm, Venetian architecture, and picturesque laneways, is a highlight for visitors seeking to immerse themselves in the rich atmosphere of Kavala.
“Kavala is a place where Northern Greek character meets the Aegean Sea. It is relaxed, authentic, and unpolished in the best possible way.” — Angelos, Anasa Experiences
"Unpolished in the best possible way." In a world of curated travel experiences and algorithm-driven destinations, there is something refreshing about a place that hasn’t tried to "perform." Even in high season, Angelos explains, you can sail for hours without crowds and anchor in secluded coves to experience Greece as it used to be.
Local Knowledge You Can’t Google
Anasa Experiences has been operating in Kavala since 2022, but Angelos and his team spent their summers here long before launching the company. They didn’t move here for business; they were already here.
That local knowledge translates directly into the sailing experience:
- Knowing which bay offers the best shelter when the afternoon breeze picks up.
- Knowing the small waterfront taverna where the fish was swimming in the sea that morning.
- Adjusting routes based on years of observation rather than just app data.
“Sailing with a local company means access to knowledge you won't find in a guidebook. It’s a more personal, flexible experience. Early check-in and late check-out are almost always given for free.”
That last detail says everything about the philosophy: hospitality first.
A Week on the Water from Kavala
Routes are never rushed. Anasa Experiences moves between quiet bays, beautiful beaches, and small coastal towns, adjusting the plan based on weather and guest preferences.
Depending on what you are looking for, there are two main styles of sailing weeks:
1. The Thasos Circle (Comfort and Calm)
- Destinations: Thasos, also known as the “Emerald Island.”
- Highlights: Pine forests, crystal-clear water, short sailing distances, protected bays.
- Best for: Beginners and anyone seeking a peaceful holiday at sea.
2. The North Aegean Adventure (Exploratory and Dramatic)
- Destinations: Thasos, Samothraki, and Limnos.
- Highlights: Volcanic landscapes, wine estates, medieval fortresses, deeper open-sea passages.
- Best for: Curious travelers and experienced sailors looking for variety.
Why the North Aegean is Different
In the Cyclades, the Meltemi wind can blow hard for days, challenging even experienced crews. The North is different:
- Winds are typically lighter and more variable.
- Sea conditions remain comfortable through the summer.
- Distances between stops are manageable.
This makes Kavala ideal for bareboat charters (for licensed sailors) or skippered charters, for families or couples looking for quiet anchorages.
Come Without a Script
Angelos’ advice for first-time visitors is clear: “Come with an open mind and without expectations shaped by more famous Greek destinations. The biggest mistake is trying to do too much in one week. Leave room for spontaneity. Often the most memorable moments are the unplanned ones.”
Best Time to Go
While summer is already calmer here compared to Southern Greece, Angelos has a personal favorite: “For me, September is ideal. Great weather, warm seas, and very few crowds.” Late May and June also offer excellent conditions, with pleasant temperatures and a relaxed marina atmosphere.
Getting to Kavala
- Fly Direct: Kavala has its own airport, Alexander the Great International Airport (KVA), with seasonal direct flights from several European cities.
- Fly and Drive: You can also fly into Thessaloniki (SKG) and enjoy a scenic two-hour drive through Northern Greece to Kavala marina.
A Different Side of Greece
There is a version of a Greek sailing holiday that looks like a highlight reel—crowded anchorages where you can almost shake hands with the boat next to you. It’s beautiful in its own way.
Then there is Kavala. Space where you didn't expect it. Silence in the middle of summer. A Greece that feels lived-in rather than curated. Angelos and Anasa Experiences aren't selling a fantasy; they are offering something rarer: a genuine encounter with a part of Greece that most visitors never discover.
Northern Greece is waiting. And it’s in no hurry.
