Book your sailing holidays on crystal clear waters.
Greece is the ideal place to rent a boat for your sailing holiday. Idyllic is a Greek word for a reason. Sailing along the ancient Greek coast with a sailing yacht, doing nothing for days, and ending the day with a stroll through the picturesque towns. If you’re trying to decide where to go on a sailing holiday, Greece is a fantastic choice. With so many diverse destinations throughout the country to explore, there is plenty to be discovered by sea for both beginners and experienced sailors alike. When you go sailing in Greece, you will coast through some of the bluest waters you’ve ever seen and land on islands that are more beautiful than you thought possible. All the Greek islands have their unique history, atmosphere, and natural beauty.
From world-famous party islands like Santorini and Mykonos to bustling cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, there is plenty of excitement to be enjoyed in Greece. Are you looking for something more relaxing? There are countless quiet Greek islands to explore by yacht charter, each teeming with sheltered bays, secluded coves, and charming villages. Over the years, we have built excellent relationships with our local partners all over Greece, meaning you will always receive a warm welcome when travelling with Tubber, regardless of where you choose to go.
Because Greece is surrounded by water and islands, the areas are diverse in sailing conditions. From the barren yet magical islands of the Cyclades to the verdant islands of the Ionian Sea, Greece has it all. This diversity and vastness make it easy to avoid mass tourism.
The very stable climate in Greece ensures that the summers are long, warm, and sunny. The seawater is pleasantly warm in the spring and summer.
The Aegean Sea is well-known for the Meltemi wind, which is a northerly wind that increases in the morning to a 5-6 Beaufort and settles again at the end of the afternoon. The Dodecanese (literally translated into 12 islands in Greek), with the islands of Kos, Rhodes and Samos, have the same phenomenon. For experienced sailors this is just a nice breeze, however, less experienced sailors should rent a sailboat in the calmer Ionian Sea or the Saronic Gulf. The Ionian Sea, on the west side of the Greek mainland, is one of the clearest in the world and the wind is mostly calm, excellent for sailors looking for a relaxed charter. Here the wind is on average between 3-4 Beaufort. In addition, the Saronic Gulf can be easily accessed from Athens and has great sailing conditions for every sailor.
The difficulty of Greece differs per area. The Ionian Sea is a great beginner's area to rent a boat for a week or two. If you go towards the Saronic Gulf (Athens) you will notice that there is already a little more wind and swell, but this is still very accessible. The Aegean Sea, the Sporades, and the Cyclades are also exceptional areas for sailing, but because of the Meltemi wind, these areas are better for a more experienced sailor. The Dodecanese is slightly more moderate, but sometimes experiences the Meltemi wind.
For sailing in Greece, experience is often enough to rent a yacht. A boat license is not usually required. Typically, to sail independently in Greece, you just need proof of experience. With this, the skipper gives a statement that he or she and a second person with sufficient sailing experience are on board. However, some rental companies might ask for a sailing license II (ICC). A lot has changed lately, and it is therefore important to always indicate which certificates you possess.
Greece is easily accessible by plane (e.g., Athens, Volos, Kos or Preveza airports). Of course, for those from nearby countries, it is also possible to travel to Greece by car. The roads are in good condition, and you can combine a journey by land with a journey by sea. Tubber can help arrange a transfer for you to take you from the airport to the harbor.
Usually, there are more fishing ports than modern marinas on the various islands. The advantage is that you often moor your sailing yacht in the heart of the village. Mooring in those places with a sailing yacht is typically very cheap because there are no modern facilities, such as showers or electricity. On the other hand, there is no shortage of beautiful, deserted coves with more bathing water than anyone can ask for.
