Day-by-Day Sailing Route in Thailand

Day 1 – Yacht Haven Marina ➝ Koh Khai Nok

Distance: 10 NM

Your sailing holiday begins at Yacht Haven Marina, located on the northern edge of Phuket, just 20 minutes from the airport. The marina is modern and well-equipped, with spacious berths, a stylish sailor’s lounge, and excellent facilities including a mini-market, laundry service, and fuel dock. Here, you’ll get familiar with your catamaran, receive a detailed safety briefing, and go over the route with your crew.

Sail south towards Koh Khai Nok, a small but stunning island that sets the tone for the entire trip. It’s a classic Thailand welcome: white sand, palm trees, and warm, crystal-clear water lapping gently against the hull.

Once anchored, you’ll have the space to truly relax. Take a moment to feel the warmth of the teak deck beneath your feet, watch the shifting light on the limestone cliffs, or simply float in the calm sea beside your yacht. With hardly another boat in sight after 5 p.m., you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into your own private island world—just sea, sky, and silence. For many, this first evening is the moment when your sailing holiday becomes something truly unforgettable.

If you’ve chosen to hire a yacht with a skipper, this is a great opportunity to get involved. You can already participate in basic manoeuvres or learn how the anchoring process works while still enjoying the calm setting.

Things to do:

  • Swim and snorkel straight off the boat

  • Try paddleboarding in calm, shallow water

  • Enjoy a peaceful sundowner with views of the limestone coast

Food tip:
Dine barefoot at a beachside shack. Grilled seafood, rice, and an icy beer—simple, authentic, perfect.

Day 2 – Koh Khai ➝ Phang Nga Bay ➝ Hong Island

Distance: 15 NM

Cruise into Phang Nga Bay, one of Thailand’s most surreal landscapes. Limestone formations rise like giants from the sea, creating endless exploration routes.

The towering karsts of Phang Nga Bay don’t just impress—they captivate. Some reach 300 metres high and have been sculpted by wind and sea over thousands of years. Local fishermen call the narrow sea channels "liang"—hidden alleyways of the ocean. Anchoring here offers a unique experience: as night falls, the cliffs echo with bird calls, and the water glows faintly with bioluminescence.

Stop at James Bond Island—better known as Khao Phing Kan—made famous by The Man with the Golden Gun. It’s the perfect photo spot and a must on any sailing holiday in Thailand.

Later, anchor near Hong Island, named for its inner lagoon (“hong” means “room” in Thai). Glide into the lagoon by kayak at high tide for total immersion in silence and stillness. In the afternoon, you can explore the lagoon by kayak or dinghy, or snorkel directly from the boat along the limestone cliffs. The waters are home to seahorses, butterflyfish, and colourful shrimp.

Things to do:

  • Explore caves, swim under limestone arches

  • Spot bats and birds nesting in cliff crevices

  • Watch the bay turn gold as the sun sets

Dinner tip:
Cook on board and eat under the stars, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the Phang Nga wilderness.

Day 3 – Hong Island ➝ Railay Beach

Distance: 12 NM

Next up is Railay Beach, in Krabi. Although technically part of the mainland, it's only reachable by boat—so it feels like another world.

Famous for its rock-climbing cliffs, hidden caves and sacred shrines, Railay blends spirituality with spectacular coastal scenery. Visit Phra Nang Cave where offerings are left to the sea goddess, or take a hike up to a cliff-top lookout.

Things to do:

  • Try rock climbing or yoga on the beach

  • Swim in calm waters or explore the lush jungle trails

  • Visit Karon Beach en route for a refreshing stop

Food tip:
Dine at The Grotto, a cave restaurant nestled under dramatic cliffs—easily one of the most romantic spots in Thailand.

Day 4 – Railay ➝ Krabi Town ➝ Koh Phi Phi Don

Distance: 20 NM

Spend your morning in Krabi Town, walking through the market, visiting temples, and soaking up the local vibe. In Krabi Town, don’t miss the riverside promenade. Walk past vendors selling grilled banana pancakes and iced coffee. It's also a good moment to stock up on supplies—fresh coconuts, Thai herbs, and spices that elevate any onboard meal. For history buffs, the nearby Andaman Cultural Museum offers insights into Krabi’s long maritime history, tracing routes all the way to India and China—highlighting how seafaring has shaped this land for centuries.

Then sail to Ko Phi Phi Don, one of the most recognised islands in Thailand. The double bay shape is famous worldwide—and even more impressive from above if you hike the viewpoint. Before arriving in Phi Phi, consider a short snorkel stop near the Emerald Cave, located just off Koh Muk. This sea cave is hidden behind a limestone wall and leads to a secret beach—one of Thailand’s most spectacular hidden lagoons.

Things to do:

  • Snorkel at Monkey Bay, home to curious macaques

  • Enjoy a lazy beach afternoon or hike to the lookout

  • Experience the vibrant village and its beach bars

Food tip:
Go fancy or stay local—either way, the food here is fresh, flavourful, and full of Thai zest.

Day 5 – Koh Phi Phi Don ➝ Maya Bay ➝ Koh Phi Phi Leh

Distance: 8 NM

Sail to Maya Bay—a jaw-dropping lagoon made famous by The Beach. Anchoring inside is no longer allowed, but you can moor nearby in Loh Sama Bay and walk the jungle trail to access the beach. ntry to Maya Bay is managed by the national park and costs 400 THB (approx. £9) per person.

While most visitors rush to Maya Bay, few take time to explore the rest of Koh Phi Phi Leh’s coast. Stop near Palong Wall for a snorkelling session—it’s a known feeding area for blacktip reef sharks, though they’re harmless. The coral gardens here are vibrant, with soft corals and schools of damselfish.

If you continue cruising further along the coast, you’ll find more translucent bays perfect for a second snorkelling stop. Here, you’re likely to spot parrotfish, rays, and—with a bit of luck—even whale sharks.

Things to do:

  • Snorkel, swim, or dive in reef-rich water

  • Visit Viking Cave and the local swallow nesters

  • Kayak the coast or enjoy the stillness from deck

Day 6 – Koh Phi Phi Leh ➝ Koh Racha Yai

Distance: 25 NM

Time to slow things down. Sail south to Koh Racha Yai, known for its crystal-clear water and peaceful pace. Anchor at Ao Tawan Tok, a broad, protected bay ideal for snorkelling, paddleboarding or just floating with a book.

Koh Racha Yai is also home to some unexpected inland charm. Walk past coconut groves and you'll find a small inland lake visited by herons and monitor lizards. If you're into photography, this island is golden hour heaven—especially from the northern cliffs. Divers should check out the wreck dive site near Siam Bay, where a small sunken barge now houses lionfish, moorish idols, and the occasional octopus hiding beneath old metal frames.

Things to do:

  • Paddle the rocky coast

  • Dive one of the clearest sites in Thailand

  • Chat with locals drying fish on the beach

Food tip:
Try fresh grilled snapper with lime and herbs at Racha Seafood—simple, fresh, and straight from the sea.

Day 7 – Koh Racha Yai ➝ Koh Yao Noi ➝ Yacht Haven Marina

Distance: 30 NM

Head north again via Koh Yao Noi, a peaceful island with untouched jungle and calm beaches—ideal for one last swim or lunch stop. Passing Koh Yao Noi is like moving back in time. This island remains largely untouched by mass tourism, and the villagers still live by the tides. You’ll see longtail boats being repaired on the beach, fishermen pulling in nets, and oxen grazing in coconut groves. It's a quiet, authentic moment to pause before returning to the bustle of Phuket’s marinas.

From there, sail along the coast past Koh Lanta, Bamboo Island, and back toward Phuket Town before docking at Yacht Haven Marina.

Things to do:

  • Stop for snorkelling near Laem Singh Bay

  • Have a quiet lunch on Bamboo Island

  • Reflect on your journey with your crew

Food tip:
Enjoy your farewell dinner at The Deck, with marina views and sunset drinks to close out your trip.
