Keep it as simple as possible
The keyword for any meal on board is always: SIMPLE. The easier you make it, the more fun your time on board will be - it's that simple! Here are the magic tips for a fun time on board:
- Leave the roast turkey at home. Despite the fact that you can surely whip up a good turkey, you're better off sticking to simple meals.
- Bring on board ingredients that you will be storing for a longer period of time. Of course, you don't want to throw away most of your meals; that's a waste of money and space.
Prepare well
The second most important word to remember? Prepared!
- Write a list of meals of your choice before departure and add the recipes from this blog.
- Consider prepping your food and then freezing it so you only have to worry about reheating it.
- Check in advance if your guests are allergic to certain ingredients (such as gluten or whole wheat) so everyone can enjoy your prepared meals.
Non-perishable foods are lifesavers
Of course, you will probably have a freezer and/or fridge on board, having non-perishable food items is always handy when you want a quick snack on a sailboat. Being on the water for an extended period of time always creates hunger in between all the fun, so make a quick note of these tips:
- Non-perishable snacks are always a good option to put on your shopping list before you leave, such as crisps, dry fruit, beef jerky (dried meat) and granola bars
- For meals, you should consider a few packs of your favourite pasta - but make sure boiling water is only made when you have anchored to avoid nasty situations.
BBQ until your belly is round
Not only is barbecuing super simple, but it also makes cooking on the boat more fun. Since you prepare your food outside instead of in a small kitchen. If you haven't bought a boat-ready BBQ yet, I highly recommend this!
Use your common sense
Last, but certainly not the least important thing to keep in mind - use your common sense when cooking and preparing your meals. Here are a few examples:
- Never BBQ indoors.
- Don't cook anything if you are on wavy water (even at anchor).
- Preserve as much as possible.
- Never leave a knife on the table or kitchen top.
- Avoid using glass dishes or cups at all times.
