(Optional) insurance

Although chartering a sailing yacht or catamaran in Croatia is considered a safe activity, it is important to consider additional insurance in case something goes wrong. Fortunately, all charter yachts are fully insured, but there are several optional insurances for additional protection. For example, Tubber offers insurance against damage to the boat or insurance against illness or accident. The insurance against damage can only be taken out through Tubber. We recommend taking out this insurance so that you can feel comfortable during your sailing trip.

Sailing licenses in Croatia

A sailing license is required to sail in Croatia. As a rule, the recreational boating license See (SBF See) or an equivalent international sailing license is required. The charter company may also impose additional requirements, such as proof of appropriate sailing knowledge and experience.

Some charter companies will also accept the license to sail inland waterways (Küstenpatent) or the inland pleasure craft license (SBF Binnen) as an equivalent sailing license for charter boats in Croatia.

If you are sailing a yacht with a VHF radio, at least one person on board must have the VHF radio certificate. Since almost all rental yachts in Croatia are equipped with VHF, it is necessary to be aware of this.

Winds in Croatia

In general, wind speeds of 10 to 20 knots blow in the spring and summer months. In the fall and winter, winds blow from 10 to 28 knots. However, there are three prevailing winds that you should be aware of. These are the Bora, the Scirocco and the Maestral.

The  Bora

The bora is a strong north-easterly wind that blows from north to north-east in Croatia. This dry and cold wind brings the nice weather from the mainland to the Adriatic. It is one of the strongest winds in Europe, but it is known for its predictable characteristics. Therefore, make sure you stay in a harbor or sheltered bay and not on the water when the bora is blowing, as the wind speeds can reach gale force and usually only last 2 to 4 days. Note: The bora is rarer in summer and most frequent in winter.

The Scirocco

The Scirocco is a warm and humid wind that can blow at any time of year. This wind blows from east to south across the Adriatic Sea. This creates rough seas and large, rain-filled clouds. When the wind reaches the south, the wind is at its strongest. The Scirocco blows at an average of 16 to 20 knots.

The Maestral

Last but not least, the Maestral. This wind is created by the air currents that rise from the warmer land and are drawn towards the sea. The result is a land-sea circulation. You can recognize the maestral by the thick white clouds. The wind picks up in the morning and is at its strongest around 14:00 (16 to 20 knots). The wind dies down again in the evening.

Climate

The country has a Mediterranean and continental climate. Just like in Germany, there are four seasons in Croatia. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild. In our opinion, the best time to sail in Croatia is between April and June and/or between September and October. During these months, the temperature is pleasant, the sea is calm and there are fewer tourists.

The ideal climate and the different sailing conditions ensure that you can fully enjoy sailing in Croatia!
