Terrible We hired the Penultimo because, at first glance, it looked like a good, well-equipped boat. It started with the electrical system. The engine wasn’t charging the service batteries. I was fobbed off several times with the excuse that this wouldn’t happen with this type of boat. At one point, I gave up on the conversation so I could still enjoy a bit of my holiday. So I had to switch on the generator very often to charge the batteries. At some point, that stopped working too, for some reason. After investigating the engine room myself, I saw that the generator had short-circuited, so it wasn’t charging anything anymore. Within 15 hours, I would be completely without power. So I took a firmer line with the rental company’s technical department. They made a few calls and then I got someone on the line who told me I had to switch off the boiler in the meter cupboard because it was causing the short circuit. Then the generator worked again. And we could charge the batteries again. That was the power situation. As for the sails. The mainsheet was so stiff that even in force 5 winds, it only ran through if you pushed against the boom. The jib sheet was badly damaged. The halyard for rolling the mainsail out of the mast was too thin or the clamp wasn’t working, so in slightly stronger winds, it came loose. The sail got stuck in the mast at the slightest touch when rolling it in and out. Even in light winds and when sailing directly into the wind. All these examples are life-threatening in bad weather conditions, and the reason nothing serious happened is because there were three experienced sailors on board who were able to act quickly and effectively. The BBQ didn’t work either, and neither did the boiler. The bow thruster was playing up towards the end. The stern thruster (which is no longer listed among the features, but I believe it was at the time of my hire) is present, contrary to what the charter company stated, but it doesn’t work at all.
