Experience the ultimate blend of French and German cultures from the water. Explore the scenic Saar and Rhine canals: no previous experience or captain’s licence necessary.
Cruising through Alsace-Lorraine is a sensation for all the senses. This border region offers a unique cultural cocktail found nowhere else in Europe. France is home to the most beautiful cruising grounds, including the picturesque Moselle and an extensive network of 8,000 kilometres of inland waterways—the largest in Europe.
Alsace-Lorraine is a premier destination for licence-free boating holidays. You’ll cruise past towering cliff-top castles, through deep emerald forests, and into historic cities. Best of all? You don’t need a licence or prior experience to be the captain of your own adventure.
Many British travellers wonder if they can handle a large canal boat without a "ticket." On the French canals, the process is incredibly straightforward.
No Experience Needed: Our vessels are purpose-built for leisure and are very easy to steer. You enjoy the total freedom of the water at your own pace.
Comprehensive Briefing: Upon arrival at the base, you will receive a full induction. We explain how to steer, operate the engine, and moor safely. Even absolute beginners will feel confident to set sail independently.
Licence Regulations: For boats up to 15 metres with a maximum speed of 12 km/h, beginners are permitted to drive after a short briefing. The hire company issues a "Carte de Plaisance" (temporary permit) for the duration of your holiday, which replaces the need for an ICC (International Certificate of Competence).
UK Comparison: Much like on the UK's Norfolk Broads or the Thames, you are the master of your vessel without needing a formal qualification.
Historical Grandeur: Visit stunning cathedrals in Strasbourg or the royal squares of Nancy. Discover medieval villages with traditional timber-framed houses reflecting the region's Franco-German heritage.
The Great Outdoors: Navigate through the vast marshes and forests of the Delta de la Sauer nature reserve.
A Gastronomic Paradise: Sample the famous Choucroute alsacienne, world-class Rieslings, and artisanal cheeses in cosy village bistros.
The Arzviller Boat Lift: A true engineering marvel! This "inclined plane" lifts your boat 45 metres up the mountainside in minutes, replacing the need for 17 locks. It is a bucket-list experience for any boater.
First-Timers: Excellent facilities and straightforward navigation make this an unforgettable spot for beginners.
Families: Children will be mesmerised by the boat lift and the many castles dotting the route—it’s one giant adventure on the water.
City & Nature Lovers: The perfect mix for those who want the peace of the forest by day and fine dining in a lively town like Saverne or Nancy by night.
Your scenery changes by the hour: from the silence of the Saarland woods to the vibrant heart of Nancy. Popular starting bases include Saverne, Lutzelbourg, Hesse, and Languimberg.
Moor up in Saverne to admire the majestic Rohan Palace or hop on a bicycle for a ride along the border paths. In the evening, relax on the deck with a glass of local white wine as the sun sets behind the Vosges Mountains.
Short Break (3–4 days): A relaxing cruise towards the historic town of Saverne, including the spectacular Arzviller boat lift experience.
One-Week Holiday (7 days): Navigate the Marne-Rhine Canal towards the imperial squares of Nancy or the European flair of Strasbourg. You’ll pass through lush forests and well-maintained locks—most of which are automatic or operated by a lock-keeper for your ease.
The Experience: The cruising season runs from April to October. The waterways are wide and calm, allowing for a stress-free journey where you decide the schedule.
Note for UK Travellers: While the Canal du Midi is famous for the sun, and Brittany for its Celtic charm, Alsace is the top choice for those who love history, engineering marvels, and world-class white wines.
