Book your next yacht
It’s a common fact that Cape Verde Islands are a popular tourist destination and that many people choose to come there for their holidays, but more and more people are turning to sailing in Cape Verde Islands, making it the perfect place to charter a yacht either with your family or your friends for a few days off.
Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony until 1975. The archipelago is of volcanic origin. Some islands are bare (Sal and Boavista) and have miles of beaches, while other islands are mountainous and green with beautiful nature, such as Santo Antao and Brava. With Tubber.com you can charter a yacht from Sao Vincente, which is directly reachable by airplane.
Cape Verde is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, on the West side of Africa, which is still relatively unspoiled by tourism. Most travelers come here for diving or hiking. The atmosphere and culture have a unique character. There are African, Portuguese and Mediterranean influences. Cape Verde consists of ten islands, eight of which are volcanic.
The archipelago is divided into two groups. The northern part consists of the islands of Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Lucia, Sao Nicolau, Sal and Boavista. The southern part includes Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava. The Cape Verdean capital city Praia can be found on the largest island São Tiago. It’s a nice city which center lies on a rock plateau called Plato. Praia has two beaches, Praia Mar and Praia Quebra-Canela, both west of the city.
Ten kilometers west of Praia you can find Cidade Velhathe, the first place where the Portuguese settled on the island. There, the fort Real de Sao Felipe is worth seeing. Twenty kilometers inland of Sao Tiago in a valley you will find the village of São Domingo, where some shops are selling craft products. From Praia you can go to Tarrafal, a town in the north which is famous for its beaches.
São Vicente is the second largest island with the beautiful colonial city of Mindelo. It is also the busiest city of Cape Verde due to the crowded harbor. Partly because the nightlife is livelier than in Praia, there are more and better pubs and clubs.
Brava is the smallest inhabited island. It is mountainous and therefore popular among climbers. There are beautiful landscapes and scenery to admire.
Santo Antão north of São Vicente is the most beautiful and the greenest of all the islands, there are many trees. It is popular among walkers because of the hills, the lush vegetation and the mountain Ribera Grande. The climb is quite an experience, but you should take a guide along. The ascent and descent take a full day to complete.
The people are friendly, but not always well-established in tourism. In the hospitality and transportation industry people often speak no other language than Portuguese or Creole. The Cape Verdean music puts a mark on your vacation and exerts an attraction to many. The rapid Funana African music and quieter coladeira alternate, while the country is the melancholic morna, which the late Cesaria Evora’s most famous performer is known for.
Due to the geographical location of Cape Verde, it has obviously a wonderful climate with relatively constant temperatures, ranging from 24 degrees during the day in January to 30 degrees in July. A real rain season is not really present, but from August to November you may expereince an occasional big rain fall. Unlike the Caribbean, Cape Verde has no tropical storms. However, there is a constant breeze, making the flat islands, such as Sal and Boavista, well-suited for windsurfers, especially in February.
