Thailand is a great place to sail all year round. There are two main seasons, which are called the wet and dry seasons, or the SW or NE monsoon. Seasonal winds are usually predictable, although there may be inconsistencies as they change from one to the other.
- North East Monsoon (Dry—November to April)
- South West Monsoon (Wet – May to October)
The dry season is fed by prevailing north easterlies that produce between 5 and 16 knots, very much within sailing range, with the occasional need to engage the diesel.
The south-west winds, which are typical of the rainy season, can be expected to blow at around 27 knots on the windiest of days. This is similar to the Meltemi in the Saronic Gulf and Cyclades.
