About Tahiti

So your trip is going to Tahiti or you are thinking about sailing here? Good choice! Located in the South Pacific, the beautiful island is part of French Polynesia. This area the size of Western Europe consists of five archipelagos with about 118 islands. Of these, Tahiti is the largest and also the only island with an international airport, namely Faa'a International Airport. The capital is Papeete, home to about 50 per cent of French Polynesia's population.

Tahiti is part of the Society Islands, or ‘Archipelago de la Société’. The islands within this archipelago are divided into 2 groups. The eastern Windward Islands (Îles du Vent) and the western Leeward Islands (Îles sous le Vent). Tahiti belongs to the Windward Islands, these islands are of volcanic origin. Thus, Tahiti consists of two extinct and mature volcanoes, which is reflected in the shape of the island. French and Maohi (Tahitian) are spoken, as well as (on a smaller scale) English.

Tahiti's unique landscape

You will encounter a beautiful landscape with tropical rainforests, high mountain peaks and a beautiful coastline with white sandy beaches on Tahiti. Tahiti is home to the highest point in French Polynesia, namely the mountain ‘Mont Orohena’. A remnant of an extinct volcano, this mountain towers up to 2241 metres above the sea. Want to take on the challenge of climbing a mountain? Then your best bet is to climb Mont Aorai. The hike through the rainforests, all the way to the top is very impressive and tough! This is then rewarded when you reach the summit at 2066 metres with stunning views.

Exotic flora and fauna

When you head inland from the coast and walk through rainforests full of exotic flowers and trees, you will also encounter amazing waterfalls. Here you can take a nice cooling dip in some pools at the bottom of the waterfall after the hike. The Fautaua waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls due to its height of 135 metres. Despite the waterfall being so famous, the way to it is very tough. After half a day of walking and climbing, you can hopefully take a dip in the Fautaua's ‘pool’ in privacy. You can also choose to go to the Faarumai Falls, also known as Les Trois Cascades'. After a 5-minute hike, you will be able to admire the three waterfalls. Unfortunately, swimming is no longer possible here.

Besides rare plant species, there are also an awful lot of animal species. You will see many colourful birds flying around, but there is also plenty to see in the underwater world. In the clear turquoise water, you can dive or snorkel well during your sailing holiday in Tahiti. There is an abundance of (pristine) colourful coral and countless species of fish to admire. You might even encounter sharks, dolphins, sea turtles and porpoises here! Is your holiday scheduled somewhere between August and October? Then you could well spot whales and humpback whales. This is because they migrate past the islands during these months to mate and feed.

What to do on Tahiti

Besides admiring the beautiful nature, there is plenty to do on Tahiti! Various excursions are offered, for instance. Learn more about the archaeology or history of the island. Not sailing for a day, but want to do something active? Then it is also possible to practice every water sport imaginable!

Plus, at the end of da, you can dine deliciously with the freshest produce. With a touch of French cuisine and Polynesian influences, fish, vegetables and exotic fruits are prepared. For example, for a delicious meal, head to ‘Hei Restaurant’, in Papeete! Vegetarians are also welcome here.

Of course, you can also buy the fresh produce yourself at the market, prepare it on the boat and have a delicious dinner on the deck! Don't forget to score a nice souvenir at the market, as a reminder of the wonderful holiday on this paradise when you are back in the Netherlands! Of course, you can also take a trip to the nearby islands, such as Tahiti's little sister ‘Moorea’ or sail to the famous Bora Bora! Moorea is only a half-hour boat ride away!

Best time to go on holiday to Tahiti

Tahiti has a tropical monsoon climate, but a tropical rainforest climate prevails on the windward side. The best months to spend your sailing holiday on Tahiti are from July to October. This way, you avoid the rainy season. Hurricanes and tropical storms can also occur from December to June. The average annual temperature is around 30 degrees.

Do I need a boating licence?

If you decide to charter a bareboat yacht, you will need a licence 2 to sail in Tahiti. It is quite a difficult sailing area. This requires experience and some knowledge, as it involves a lot of responsibility.

Would you like a more relaxed sailing holiday or do you lack experience? Then hire a yacht with skipper! You do not need a sailing licence when there is a skipper and crew on board. The skipper is familiar with the area and can show you all the great spots!

If you have always wanted to imagine yourself in paradise, Tahiti is the right destination. Floating by catamaran over the clear blue water and then relaxing with a cocktail in your hand... who wouldn't want that! But you can also go here for adventure and admiring fantastic exotic nature. What are you waiting for?
