A Beautiful Sailing Route Starting from Portisco with a Corsican Touch
In June, we had the incredible opportunity to sail this exact route, and it was an unforgettable experience. The weather was absolutely perfect all week—sunny skies, warm temperatures, and just the right amount of breeze. We felt incredibly lucky to find the anchorages and harbors not too crowded, making the journey even more special. The wind was consistently good, offering ideal sailing conditions every day. If you’re considering a similar adventure, I can’t recommend this itinerary enough. Here’s a day-by-day guide to help you plan your own dream sailing trip around Sardinia and Corsica.
7-Day Sailing Itinerary Between Sardinia and Corsica
Day 1 | Portisco – Tavolara
Your journey begins in Portisco, a natural harbor well-protected from Mediterranean currents and winds. After checking in and provisioning your yacht, set sail for the pristine island of Tavolara, about 14 nautical miles south. This island’s rectangular shape and steep limestone cliffs rising 565 meters above the sea make it a breathtaking sight. Anchor or moor on the southern side of the island for the night.
Day 2 | Tavolara – Caprera
Tavolara’s waters are popular among divers. If you enjoy hiking, take a guided walk to the island’s summit for stunning 360-degree views. The tourist area of Spalmatore di Terra offers quaint restaurants and a lovely beach.
After lunch, sail approximately 25 nautical miles to Caprera. Anchor safely in the bay of Spiaggia I due Mari, known for its calm waters. Caprera is part of the Maddalena Archipelago, boasting beautiful bays and a rich cultural history.
Day 3 | Caprera – Bonifacio (France)
Start your morning with a swim in the turquoise waters of Spiaggia I due Mari. Relax on the nearby beaches like Cala Napoletana or Cala Serena. After lunch, set sail for Bonifacio in Corsica. Be mindful of the strong winds in the strait between Sardinia and Corsica. This 23-nautical-mile crossing rewards you with breathtaking cliffs and the stunning natural harbor of Bonifacio.
Day 4 | Bonifacio – Budelli Island
Bonifacio’s harbor is naturally sheltered by hills and cliffs. Explore the charming streets, enjoy a coffee at one of the idyllic cafes, and visit landmarks like the Sant’Amanza Tower or the King of Aragon’s staircase. In the late afternoon, sail for three hours to Budelli Island. Anchor on the eastern side of this picturesque spot.
Day 5 | Budelli Island – Cala Gavetta
Budelli, part of the La Maddalena National Park, is perfect for lounging at Spiaggia Rosa. This beach, named after its pink coral sand, is uninhabited and considered one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful islands. After lunch, sail less than two hours to Cala Gavetta, the main port on Maddalena Island. Here, you’ll find recreational facilities, historic buildings, and even luxury accommodations.
Day 6 | Cala Gavetta – Portisco
After morning coffee, sail to Soffi Island. With crystal-clear water and soft white sand, it’s an ideal spot for sunbathing. Once ready, head back to Portisco. Spend your final night exploring the town, shopping for souvenirs, or enjoying a relaxed dinner with fresh pasta or seafood and a glass of fine Italian wine.
Day 7 | Portisco – Olbia
If your flight departs in the afternoon or evening, take some time to explore Olbia. Visit the colorful historic center, the Romanesque Cathedral of San Simplicio, or the National Archaeological Museum. For shopping, check out the charming boutiques. Before leaving, treat yourself to lunch at Antica Trattoria, known for its exceptional Italian specialties.
