As passionate sailors, we know that cooking on board a sailboat can sometimes be a challenge. Limited space, lack of fresh ingredients and the constantly moving environment can make cooking difficult. But don't worry! With our practical tips and tricks, you can prepare delicious and balanced meals even on the open sea. Read on to find out how you can make the most of your galley.
1. preparation is the be-all and end-all
Before you start cooking on a sailing yacht, you need to be well prepared. Create a shopping list with all the necessary ingredients and make sure you have enough supplies for the planned trip. Think about long-life foods such as pasta, rice, canned goods and dried herbs. It is also practical to take fresh food with you that has a long shelf life, such as apples and carrots.
2. efficient storage
If space is limited, it is important to use efficient storage options. Use nets, hooks and storage boxes to organize your kitchen utensils and supplies. Make sure heavy items are securely fastened to prevent them from slipping during the journey. Vacuum-sealed bags can also help keep food fresh for longer and save space in the fridge.
3. meal planning
When cooking on a sailing boat, proper meal planning is essential. Plan your meals in advance so you know exactly what ingredients you need and how you can add variety to your meal plan. Choose simple dishes that require minimal cooking time and the use of few pans and pots. Stews and oven-baked dishes are great options when cooking on a sailing yacht. Don't forget to take into account any dietary restrictions the crew may have.
4. Creative cooking with limited resources
On a sailboat, you often have to get creative with limited resources. Learn to improvise and use what you have on board. For example, try making a delicious pasta sauce from canned tomatoes, olives, garlic and dried herbs. Experiment with flavours and spices, and don't be afraid to try new dishes. Who knows, you might discover a new favourite dish!
5. safety first!
Safety is always the top priority on board a sailing boat, even in the kitchen. Make sure your stove and oven are working properly and keep firelighters within reach. Be careful when handling knives and hot pans, especially when the vessel is in motion. Also remember good hygiene and wash your hands regularly, as an infection at sea can have serious consequences.
