Essential Items for Your Sailing Packing List
Ahoy there, adventurers of the sea! Before you hoist the sails and head towards the horizon, there’s a list of essential supplies for sailing vacations that you need to check off to ensure your trip goes smoothly. So, let's cast off and get started!
As the captain of the ship, you must always have your travel documents within reach. Think of your skipper's license, VHF radio operator's license, crew list, and the appropriate insurance information. Make sure they are safely stored before you set sail.
And let's not forget: cash is king, especially in remote bays where credit cards are not always accepted. Although you can shop locally, the onboard refrigerator has its limitations. Ensure you have at least three days' worth of food and drinking water on board, even if you plan to enjoy local restaurants.
Health on board is also of great importance. Make sure the crew is aware of each other's medical conditions and knows where the medications are stored.
Packing clothing and personal items can be a challenge given the limited storage space on board. Opt for practical backpacks and duffel bags instead of cumbersome suitcases. And don't forget those non-slip shoes with white soles and a waterproof jacket.
Clothing-Related Gear
- Light duffel bag and dry bag - Ideally, you should be able to pack all your belongings in a single backpack. A dry bag is extremely practical for short trips with the dinghy to shore.
- Sailing (or cycling) gloves - Heavy and thick mooring lines often get overgrown with sharp shells, and pulling such a rope with bare hands is no heroic feat :)
- Waterproof cases for documents, tablets, and mobile phones, Hat or sunglasses strap
Electronic Equipment
- 12-V USB charger (from a car) and portable chargers - Remember that 220V outlets on board only work in marinas or city docks; while sailing with a running engine or at anchor, the boat operates on a battery, and only 12V outlets are available.
- Tablet - You'll appreciate it not only during navigation (place the tablet in a waterproof case) but also if the children on board need some distraction during bad weather :)
- Extension cord - There are never enough outlets on board.
- Headlamps (with red light) - our eyes adjust faster at night to red light. However, use white light when taking a dinghy trip at night.
Repair Equipment
- Classic "duct tape" (black or silver) - A sailboat is a magical place where things break or tear more often than on land. Good old "MacGyver" tape is an absolute must-have.
- Multitool or Swiss army knife - Apparently, every crew uses this handy tool on the boat. Some sailing knives even have a special hook to loosen tangled knots.
- Shackle - It's something like a carabiner that you can use to attach ropes, chains, or sails. Every captain should have a few spare shackles.
- Peeler, aluminum foil, and kitchen paper - With a peeler, you can safely peel vegetables even if the boat heels over; you can wrap food leftovers in aluminum foil; and with kitchen paper, you can not only wipe the pans but also the constantly wet floor :)
- Scented diaper bags - use these bags for used toilet paper. You should never throw paper directly into the toilet when living on a boat.
