What is your first memory of being on board of your carbon catamaran?
"It was in the bay of Saint-Tropez, around 5 years ago just after the boat was launched. I had read raving reviews about this carbon catamaran in sailing magazines and blogs. I got very excited about it since it was the first really fast catamaran accessible for 'normal people' on the market.
My only wish was to see it in person and I could only dream to actually sail it. Therefore, I got in touch with its designer, Hugo Le Breton. His name might sound French to many, but actually, he is a Dutch guy. He offered me to come around during my vacation in Saint-Tropez to the boat. After we met, Hugo asked me about my sailing skills and told me that we could go sailing, because there were some people interested to see its performance. There was also a helicopter in the area that wanted to take pictures and videos of the boat. It was a great opportunity for me to experience this catamaran in action!"
Tell us about your experience.
"I was very impressed with the boat. It was fast and by far my best sailing experience. At the same time, it was also very comfortable and easy to manage with just 2 people. On that day the weather was great but we only had some 10 to 12 knots of wind. I was amazed to see a boat speed of 16 knots, which is amazing in these types of conditions. We were effortlessly passing by Saint-Tropez and getting lots of attention from people on mega yachts we passed. It definitely was a memorable experience!
The boat was just developed and built completely in carbon to very high specifications. It was way too expensive for me, so I thought I would never be able to afford it. Fast forward three years later the Sig came for sale, and now I own this catamaran. So if you like fast sailing and catamarans, then you are welcome to Greece this summer. You can rent my catamaran with a skipper for your upcoming holidays. Just be ready to get lots of questions and attention from people!"
Why do you think people should start boating?
"It is the best way to experience the outdoors. Travel from place to place in a really fun way. You have a completely different perspective on the world from the water, especially by sailing a catamaran like this. People can relax and enjoy the speed at the same time. You have the best of both worlds, achieving double digits and relaxing on the lounge platform."
Are there any rules or traditions when you are onboard your catamaran?
"No, but it is a very good idea. We do not really have any special traditions yet, but we should definitely create some. We spent the first years on improving and perfecting the boat. There weren't many sailing trips and opportunities to set up our own traditions. However, we do always spend the first day on the boat by getting familiar with it. We try to sail in a nice and quiet area to refresh our sailing skills."
Can you advise any nice routes to take with your catamaran? Why are they special?
"There are many nice Greek islands to visit. For example, I like to go to Ikaria, Corfu, and Mykonos. Mykonos is one of the most fun islands in Greece. It is like Ibiza in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is fun to go there with this boat because it will take only one day to sail there. However, there are many other small and private islands around. I love to combine party scenes with nice relaxing quiet places."
How would you describe your perfect boating holiday?
"After arriving in Athens, I would spend some time exploring it. There are so many places to see and visit especially in the historical parts of the city. The next day I would go to the small bay to get familiar with the boat and brush up on my sailing skills. After I feel good about my sailing techniques, I would go to explore the beautiful town of Mykonos. Usually, I would go to a party and enjoy some nice food in one of the restaurants. After a good party, I like to experience the sea from the boat, relax on the lounge platform, or go diving."
Do you have any tips on how to make your carbon catamaran go faster?
"On Tubber, we ask people to rent our catamaran with the skipper. He can really show you where to go and how to maximize the speed potential on the boat. It is the best way to have a comfortable and safe holiday. It is quite a demanding and sensitive boat to sail.
P.S.
I would like to give a warning to people who want to rent this catamaran. This boat suits people who love to sail and experience the wind. It is a fast boat so you should not expect a super comfortable interior. There is no big kitchen available, or big spacious bedrooms. On this carbon catamaran, it is all about the outdoor space. It is definitely not the right boat for people who want to stay inside."
