What to look for in a Marina

Location

Location is one of the most important aspects when considering a marina. The location will determine your sailing route.

  • If you're looking to avoid anchoring off-shore, then planning ahead is crucial to avoid any stress during your sailing holiday.
  • Depending on what you're looking for, location can be everything. Perhaps you prefer something secluded and off the beaten path. You may choose to be in the centre of town to enable you to explore the local area. Or you could choose to be close to beaches or waterways and rivers.
  • Whichever you choose, knowing the location of the marinas you'll be in will help you plan other parts of your holiday. It can help you plan activities while in the marinas, budgeting for the rest of the route, or shopping for supplies.
  • After researching possible marinas along your sailing route, feel free to contact us if you're still unsure about where the best spots are. We can help point you in the right direction!

Cost

Planning your holiday comes with a specific budget plan. The cost of a marina is another big factor to consider when choosing a marina.

  • The marina costs vary depending on the location and time of year. Due to this variation, it can be difficult determining what's a good deal and what isn't. You can expect to pay anywhere between 5 and 250 Euros depending on these factors as well as others.
  • We suggest researching the area and calling around for price estimates. If it's during the peak season, you'll want to book in advance to ensure you get a good deal and reserve a spot in their marina.
  • As mentioned earlier, if you're still unsure, feel free to contact us at Tubber before you leave or during your stay. We would be happy to help guide you in approximately what you should be paying according to your location.

Facilities

Here are a few things you should consider when looking at the facilities of a marina:

  • Does it have toilet and shower facilities that are clean and safe?
  • Is the dock stocked with diesel, petrol, and pump-out stations?
  • Does it stock ice and bait for sale?
  • Does it have a laundry?
  • If you're travelling with a pet, is it pet-friendly?
  • Is there a lounging area? If so, is it appropriate for your needs; family friendly, bar access, etc?
  • Do they have an environmentally friendly waste disposal?
  • Finally, does the marina have a store stock with boat essentials such as parts, supplies, and accessories?

Dockside Services

Dockside with boats

The boat-side service offered is another aspect to consider when choosing a marina. Things you should look for include:

  • Adequate and compatible electricity and water
  • Cable
  • Wifi
  • Dock carts
  • A mobile pump-out service
  • Waste disposal units
  • A well-maintained dock area

Maintenance Services

You can determine if a marina is suitable for you based on the condition the marina is in. Take these into consideration:

  • Haul-out and drop-in services, if needed
  • Pressure washing services
  • Well trained mechanics and technicians
  • Fiberglass repair service
  • Painting services
  • Wash, wax, and detailing services

Surrounding Amenities

These are a few questions to ask if you don't want to anchor your boat in the middle of nowhere:

  • Does the marina have a restaurant or bar?
  • If not, are there good restaurants close by?
  • Alternatively, is there a bbq or picnic area nearby?
  • Is there access to grocery stores to stock up on food supplies?
  • Is there access to a doctor or pharmacy nearby in case of emergencies? Hopefully, you won't need this but it is always good if there are any health concerns or emergencies while sailing.

Recreational Amenities

If you like to have fun while at the marina, you should ask these questions:

  • Does the marina have a shuttle service or bicycle rentals?
  • Is there a scuba diving tour?
  • Does it have access to tennis courts, playgrounds, or swimming pools?
  • Are there any local tours nearby? For example, day tours of the city centre?
  • Does the marina host any special events?
  • Is there paragliding or windsurfing companies nearby?
  • Will you have access to the local attractions?

Marina Staff

You should look for these characteristics:

  • A well-trained boat mechanic
  • Trustworthy security
  • Capable dock hands
  • Friendly and helpful reception staff
  • Efficient cleaning crews

There's a lot to consider, we know it can be overwhelming! Hopefully, this guide will help planning your next sailing holiday easier. If you need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions before or during your holiday trip. However, if you're sailing with a skipper, you won't need to worry about any of these things; sit back and relax on the deck.
