A good packing list or checklist helps you avoid forgetting the essentials. It allows you to travel with peace of mind and fully enjoy your sailing holiday.
As a skipper and passionate sailor, I’ve learned how important it is to pack smart when heading out on a sailing trip.
Whether you're sailing with family, friends or colleagues, I often see people show up with far too much luggage. It’s not only a hassle, but it also takes up space you could use more wisely. Storage on a yacht is limited—so packing less really does mean enjoying more.
To help you pack without stress, I’ve created a practical checklist. It ensures you won’t forget anything important for your trip. You’ll have everything you need—no more, no less.
Find the full list below and get ready for an unforgettable sailing holiday!
A Few Tips to Start With
Less is More
The more you pack, the more you have to carry. Chances are, you won’t even wear half of your clothes.
Only take what you really love wearing. No one will notice if you’ve worn those shorts three times.
Dress for the Climate
Sailing in the Greek islands in summer? You’ll need very little thanks to the heat. Heading to Croatia or elsewhere in spring? You’ll want some warmer layers.
Always include comfy clothes for walks on land—think cosy jumpers or sturdy shoes for evening strolls or day trips. These tips also apply if you're planning a short city break during your trip.
Choose Travel-Sized Toiletries
Space is tight on board. Opt for small, travel-sized bottles for toiletries to save space and make your bag lighter.
Bring a Soft Bag, Not a Suitcase
Hard-shell suitcases are handy at airports, but not on a boat. Use a foldable duffel or soft bag that’s easy to stow once unpacked.

First Aid & Safety
Good preparation means packing the right safety items. Always bring a small first aid kit, including painkillers and any personal medication. It gives peace of mind if anything happens along the way.
Make sure to carry your passport, medical card and any necessary visas. Keep copies of important documents in a separate place, just in case. And always carry your health insurance card and flight tickets in your hand luggage so you have them close at hand. This way you can go on holiday with peace of mind and enjoy your sailing adventure to the fullest.
Sleep & Relaxation
A great holiday starts with good sleep and enough downtime on board. Bring your own sleep essentials like a comfy pillow, sleep mask and earplugs to block out noise.
For relaxing moments, pack a good book or e-reader. A power bank and universal plug adaptor are must-haves for keeping your devices charged. A quality pair of sunglasses is essential to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare. And if you care for your hair after a day in the sea breeze, pack your favourite conditioner too.
Personal Needs
Everyone has their own comforts and must-haves on holiday. Pack enough underwear and socks to keep you fresh each day. Essentials like your toothbrush, toothpaste, favourite shampoo, conditioner and sunscreen should all make the cut.
Want to capture memories? Bring a camera. Planning day trips? A small backpack is super handy. And don’t forget a few snacks for those longer stretches on the water. A well-packed bag means you’re always ready to enjoy the journey.
